FYN RESTAURANT
FYN is a fine dining experience built on tension between wild South African ingredients and the precision of contemporary cuisine. We were commissioned to craft a visual identity that could hold this tension: refined but raw, minimalist but emotional, traditional but boundary-pushing. Our aim was not just to design a logo, but to express the soulof the space and the food and create a living system that evolves with the restaurant.
FYN RESTAURANT CREATIVE DIRECTION & DESIGN
FYN is a fine dining experience built on tension between wild South African ingredients and the precision of contemporary cuisine. We were commissioned to craft a visual identity that could hold this tension: refined but raw, minimalist but emotional, traditional but boundary-pushing. Our aim was not just to design a logo, but to express the soulof the space and the food and create a living system that evolves with the restaurant.
Research
We began by immersing ourselves in the philosophy of FYN’s food a fusion of South African storytelling and Japanese Kaiseki structure. This led us to the core concept: Hunt, Gather, Seek. It’s a lens through which fine dining can be reimagined as a journey of discovery — both for the chef and the guest. We studied traditional Japanese Hanko (seal) stamps for their symbolism and restraint, and explored how nature, texture, and ritual could be woven into the visual language without feeling ornamental or cliché.
Design
The identity system is built around three custom icons representing hunt, gather, and seek, each influenced by Japanese Hanto mark-making. The marks intentionally break from their circular frame, a metaphor for FYN’s constant push beyond traditional fine dining boundaries.
We paired this icon system with a dark, earthy colour palette that mirrors the interior: blackened woods, aged brass, and deep chocolate hues. Typography is sharp and restrained, allowing the iconography and materials to carry emotional weight.
Textural elements taken from nature and raw materials were introduced across menus and collateral to echo the restaurant's atmosphere. These textures are never decorative they are physical expressions of the ingredients and the space itself.
Development
Because FYN changes its menus seasonally (sometimes weekly), we designed a flexible production system that allowed for rapid in-house updates without compromising visual consistency. Templates, type scales, and texture systems were developed to empower the internal team to deliver new printed menus and materials on the fly.
The result is an identity that feels lived-in and dynamic, not static branding, but a design system that evolves as the restaurant does.
